Decision Time

New Year... new goals, new projects. What do I want to be and do this year. Aside from the first priority which is of course wife and mother. So long as those relationships are running well what do I do as Lyric the "Artist?" I'd like to concentrate more on entering my work into the local fine arts market rather than nationally juried art/quilt shows. I'll still do a few of those if I have work that suits but the shipping is a killer.
So... by Friday I need to decide which pieces to enter into the Raleigh Fine Arts Society show. A very nice juried show at a very high end venue... Meymandi Hall at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. And good grief I just don't know what to enter. It's always tough when they don't have an "other" or "mixed media" category. Just painting/sculpture/graphic arts.
Want to help? Here are your choices... vote for your top two and the winners will each get a set of three note cards featuring the An Apple A Day. I'll tally the votes Tomorrow around 5pm.

I also don't have titles for the last four. So name suggestions for the circle pieces would be great.
1-An Apple A Day (triptych)
2-Fundasies (triptych)
3-Circle (pink background)
4-Circle (brown and gold)

  1. I like Circle Brown/Gold and the Daisies. And the Apple. And the other circle. So how DO you decide? K - my top 2 choices are in the order above. :)

  2. I like them all but I like the Fundaisies and Circle with the pink background best.

  3. If I could choose one to put up in my home, I think I'd pick the daisies. But to win an art show? I think the purple one captured me the most. I felt like the ink bubbles were holding the red circle in the painting temporarily until the painting could be finished. (OK, so I know nothing about art, but the piece intrigued me.) My votes are:
    1. Purple
    2. Daisies
    3. Apples
    4. Circle Brown/Gold
    But you can't go wrong.

  4. I love number four although 3 is a very close second. How about Elliptical Moon for a title?
The name just jumped into my mind so I thought I would share. . .

  5. I like the Circle Brown/Gold, which I think wants to be called "Madrigal Forest" because the gold stream drawn through the ring like a magical song going through the forest.

I like the apples, too,as it fits somewhat into graphics. but I think the circle with pink background says fine art better to me, and will show how you can vary a theme better.
name? well, I think, Fairy Trails, but that sounds too twee for what I mean. It sort of reminds me of the cup and ring marks that can be found here in the British Isles...as if Giants had left marks with their cups on the furniture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cup_and_ring_mark I think the fairies have left trails as they traveled across the ring mark.

Does this sound too weird? I often see stories in peoples work.

    thanks for sharing!

  7. Hi Lyric! It's good to find your blog! I like the bottom 2 pieces. :)

  8. I vote for #3, which I now call Dreams and #4, which I now call Wishes.

All of them are wonderful, but those are the two I would choose, at this moment.

I wish you a new year with no more difficult decisions than this!

  9. #4, followed by #3. I love the lunar feel to both of those pieces!

  10. I vote for #3 and #4. Number 3 made me think of the recent fires and the sun burning hot behind the haze of smoke. How about calling it "As the Smoke Cleared".

  11. Hi,

My favs are #3 followed by #4, but if you asked me in an hour, it could be #4 followed by #3. Both beautiful. ANd I really like the way the embellishment extends out onto the matte. Wish I had your talent.... :-)

  12. I vote for the daisies and number 4, the red dot immediately reminded me of a condom so I immediately saw the name "Contraception" for it,(I cannot explain why my mind takes me where it does)... The green piece hit me two ways, as a golden moon caught in the branches of a forest maybe "Bad Moon Rising"?...and it also immediately brought to mind a phrase my mom always use to tell us as kids when we were trying to avoid doing something... "You cannot go over, nor under, when the only way is through"...also not a bad title for this piece.

    Good luck whatever you enter

  13. Hi Lyric....
I like #2 the Daisies, so bright and cheery..........
and #4.... the Brown Ring. I see 'Eternity" in this..for 2 reasons, the ring ususally symbolizes eternity, but also the chain... no end/not start... just forever.
All the best with your new focus for 2008....... a look at your work says you will be successful.

  14. I'm going to add my votes for #3 and #4 (I can't help it, I am a big fan of circular motifs!)

  15. I love the daisies. The bright colors and bold flowers bring joy to my heart.

  16. Hi Lyric. So happy you are blogging. I vote for the bottom two pieces. I would like to recommend that you go in to your seetings and select a popup window for comments then we can see what we are talking about.

  17. I absolutely LOVE Circle Brown/Gold. I would hang it in my home. I also think it's the most likely to be appreciated in the venue. A title doesn't come to mind, but it looks like a sickle moon to me and the background looks like moonlight. For your second piece, I'd vote for the other circle piece.

  18. I love both the circle pieces, but especially the last one. I'm no expert on fine art showsk, but they also look like they would do best in that kind of venue.

The daisies are fun, cheerful, colorful- but my vote goes to the circle pieces.

  19. I vote #4, then #2 for that sort of venue. Good contrast and both very versatile.

  20. My vote goes to Apples, and then the Brown/Gold Circle. How about "Moon Shadow" for the circle? Love what you've done with your blog so far... it is pretty addictive, isn't it? - Susan

  21. My strongest leaning is toward #3 followed by #1. No clever ideas for titles, but I do love what you're doing. Good Luck!

  22. I vote for the two circle pieces.

Naming is hard for me also. How about "Spilling Across" and "Spilling Through". Or "Resilience" and "Erosion".

    Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_moon
says that a full moon in August is called a "Red Moon". You could look it up to other names for the same moon.

  23. I vote for #3 first, Moon Flow, followed by #4, Forest Flow. Good luck, Lyric!

    1. #4
    2. #3
    3. #1
    4. #2

How about Circle Trail for #3 and Forest Moon for #4.

  26. Apple a Day. I'd love to have it hanging in my home.

  27. I adore the last piece -- it's very soothing to me. The daisys are very nice too, but for a fine arts show, I would go with the last two pieces.

  28. Because of the venue, I'd choose to enter the last two. The red circle made me think of the sun .. "That Lazy Old Sun" (after the old song) because it seems to be rolling along. And the other circle is obviously a moon in the forest ... "Secret Moon".

Lyric, these are all wonderful! Good luck, and have fun!

  29. The last two without names with the nodes going across them. Node or Node Due? no contest.

  30. Lyric,

I like the apple-a-day tryptich and the #3 circle. "Red Sun Rising"?

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1st Choice: #4 Circle (brown & gold)
    2nd Choice: #2 Fundasies (triptych)

    Names for Circles:
    Red/Orange Circle: Autumn's Call
    Brown Circle: Tranquil Dusk

  32. I vote for 4 and 3. I LOVE them. I'm not good with names either but boy other people sure seem to be.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I absolutly love No.4 then No.3
can't think of a name but I love some of the ones other people have suggested.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'd choose 3 and 4: suggestions for titles - Harvest Moon and Horned Moon (an old name for the new moon which immediately sprang to mind when I saw this one) I could stand and look at either of these all day and still see new things in them

    ReplyDelete
  35. I am most attracted to #4. Although the others are fun, this one seems to be more thoughtful. Having said that, the title that springs to my head is "Here We Go Round the Fantasy Tree". The two thoughts seem oxymoronic.

  36. I like the daisys and the brown circle. I will be taking a class with you at VCQ Celebration in April. Can hardly wait. I am on the COmmittee

  37. I like the 2 cirlce pieces the best although any of them are worthy of entry.

  38. My vote is cast for the 2 circle pieces. Good luck!!

  39. The last one with the frame really speaks to me. The colors are so calm and wonderful - something very earthy, but spiritual in the composition and colors. The frame sets the entire piece off.

  40. Circle (brown and gold) - matches the weather here in Seattle at the moment - which I think is beautiful even if it is raining.

  41. First choice is for daisy tryptich.
    1.Everything's Coming Up Daisies
    2.Stop & Smell the Daisies

Second Choice is for the pink/red circle with black "bubbles"
3.Crying Over Spilled Sangria (or some other beverage).

    Ring with trees ideas:
    4. Woodland Ring
    5. Enchanted Forrest
    6. Walking Through the Woods on a Golden Evening

  43. I like them all but my favorites are the apples and the gold circle. However the gold circle looks like a C to me and I would title it: C is for circle
