Welcome to Week 4 of my year long determination to learn how to draw faces.
At a daughter's concert. Fast sketches then longer ones... using pencil and eraser
I think perhaps next year I'm going to need to work on hands. ug.
Same concert - this looks like her!!! Friends of the kid I drew on the other side happened to be sitting next to me and kept looking over my shoulder. I ripped it out and gave it to them for him. They handed it back and asked me to sign it. (big grins)
Sketches at church, my own "Calvin" from a photo. (Calvin and Hobbes)
This little guy is full of happy mischief and loves to make faces!
Concentrating on the mirror. Kids said I looked mad so I tried a smiling face - goofy.
I like my spiky haircut.
Watching TV. From my imagination.
I've always secretly wanted pointy ears.
How is your journey coming along?
I am very much enjoying your Friday faces posts. Thanks for sharing your learning process.
ReplyDeleteGREAT, Lyric! I especially like the quick sketches... very "real" to me!!
ReplyDeleteYour faces are quite good. I know you want to do faces that or more recognisible, but I really learned alot from your tutorial about drawing faces. It came just when I decided my journal quilts will be faces this year so I could learn how to do them. even just after your tutorial my first face actually looked like a real human! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSo, do you have any further advice about noses, as I don't seem to be able to get them right. boxer noses or pointy witch lady noses but not too much inbetween without alot of reworking.
but even so, now I am doing pretty good with 'nice' faces, like the one you did in the video, but I would like to be able to do expressions. any ideas?
ultimately I would like to do faces that are more on the comics side, but I think I need to do the practice on realistic ones to a point before I start breaking the rules.
Thanks,
Sandy in the UK
hosestly Sandy - if I knew how to do them I'd let you know. I'm having trouble with noses too. It's helping to make a black and white, high contrast photo of the face and see where the lines and shadows actually are.
ReplyDeleteI'm just practicing, and trying, and failing, and trying again. I'm just getting ready to post faces for 2.11.
Some good, some bad.
One thing that sometimes helps is to pay close attention to the shape of the tip. Pencil in a roundness, or a little bit of an indent, or whatever shape you are seeing - then fill in the details around it.
My sister sent a link for "expressions" from a comic artist - I'll see if I can find it and post it.
