I haven't entered many shows for the past six years or so. That happens when you have as many kids as I do. I spend much of my limited spare time teaching instead of creating. I also got a little burned out on the expense of jury fees and shipping costs. I was keeping my work "out there" and winning awards and making a few sales but only broke even with my expenses. It was LOT of work for very little profit. No, I don't do it for the money - but right now I'm conserving my resources, both financial and emotional/mental for other things.
So this is the first year in a long time that I've entered any shows at all and most have been local fine art shows - not necessarily art quilt shows. This year I've entered five shows and have been rejected from every one so far. I've been involved in enough jury processes that rejection is not something I take personally. My finished artwork is separate from my personal identity - it's not a comment on my self worth when it is rejected. Still - rejection is no fun.
I had already received a rejection letter from "A Sense of Scale" and had forgotten that I had a third piece entered so it was a very pleasant surprise when the acceptance email came later in the day. It will be lots of fun to see it in Houston since I'll be teaching there this year.
I have never entered anything so I can't begin to understand how you toughen yourself to that process.I DO know that I like the vignettes you showed in today's post. They seem like people--not symmetric throughout, but with some balance and beauty in the quirkiness, some a little rough with tattered cloth, some with very close controlled lines, some that burst out with joy unexpectedly yet all could be cut from the same cloth, as the saying goes.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being accepted into SAQA and the International quilt shows! This piece is lovely. I admire you for being able to separate your accomplishments from your personal identity. For some of us, that's hard to do.
ReplyDeletecongratulations. I adore this series, it's so beautiful, and I'll thrilled more people (like me) will be able to see it in person.
ReplyDeleteLyric Your piece includes those bits of handwork, imagination, similarity of palette, difference in expression that makes for a wonderfully inviting the viewer to come closer textile piece. Congratulations on being accepted into the SAQA show and as well for your ability to prioritize in your life where to put your focus and energies.

ReplyDeleteConratulations on your quilts being accepted, they are beautiful.
Lyric, I'm happy to hear that this work has been accepted by SAQA; as it should be! They do have "ties" and each is distinct is unique and lovely on its own.
ReplyDeleteAs for entering shows, I have yet to answer a magazine challenge. It is difficult for me to show my work in an online class. But, I'm getting there.
Congratulations!
