I'd like to introduce you to a wonderful new book
The Sketchbook Challenge
Techniques, Prompts, and Inspiration for Achieving Your Creative Goals
If you've been following along here for a while you know I've had the joy of participating in the Sketchbook Challenge blog. Our fearless leader, the talented, organized, and ever full of initiative Sue Bleiweiss has authored a book that pulls together the various artists (plus some) involved in the project.
Each of us chose to work a sketchbook with one of the themes and create a work of art inspired by our work in that sketchbook. Sue then pulled a technique or two from each artist to highlight.
This means that whether you like books for pure visual inspiration or to learn techniques there is something in it for you. Might I also say that there is something very pleasing to me in the books slightly smaller than standard size and rounded corners. No idea why but I simply love to hold it in my hands. I immediately chose the theme of "Circles." I love that shape - no idea why. It shows up in my work over and over.
It was wonderful fun to work with a theme over and over through the pages of a sketchbook. For this one I seemed to be attracted to pen and ink with only a little color thrown in here and there. Even when the lines ore doodled instead of tightly controlled it looks clean and crisp. I keep trying to look loose and free and wonderfully textured like so many of the artists I greatly admire but I always end up back here. It's not a bad thing.
The technique that Sue chose to pull from my finished artwork was screen printing. It's one of the most direct ways that work from my sketchbook shows up in my textile work. Ink doodles are made directly into thermofax screens and discharged or printed onto my hand dyed cloth and made into artwork.
In this case circle scribbles and dot doodles were made into screens and both discharged, painted, and foiled onto the cloth. An amazingly lovely collection of shibori scraps (wish I could remember the artist's name) became even more circles in this piece. I have to say it was a lovely few days of playing with this design.

ReplyDeleteMy answer to your question "Do you use a sketchbook to work out designs for your artwork?" would be: Sometimes... and sometimes designs just 'develop themselves' when I go through my doodles and ideas, which make up most of the contents of my sketchbooks. I really doodle a LOT.

Hey Lyric... I DO use a sketckbook (many) in preparing for new work, and always use my Inktense Pencils for colouring the sketches, add Misty Fuse backed embellishments and fabric "auditions" right into the sketchbook pages and often use left over PRO CHEM dyes from fabric dyeing (kept in the extra fridge) for colouring pages as well.

ReplyDeleteI have a few sketchbooks I have purchased but mainly seem to just make notes in them. I work mainly on my design wall (quilter). I have just ordered some zentangle books and plan on playing with my 11 year old granddaughters at the cottage next month. The book looks like something I need to kick start my next adventure.

I do use Sketchbook, everyday the different artist show how they used it in there world, so I try to do the same in mine, Urban Sketching, I have never done that before made me see things in a different way, to do my drawings, and mini quilts, thanks for sharing,
ReplyDeleteI don't really use a sketchbook to work out a design but do use it to just practice my drawing and to try to draw something at least twice a week to make a creative habit of it.
ReplyDeletewhen I do go to make my design it's usually on a larger paper since my thing is art quilts which tend to be bigger than a sketchbook. the practice is so important though - and just feels good :-)

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun blog and I love your work! I guess I should use a sketchbook as I usually fly by the seat of my pants and just create whatever pops in my head at the time!! ReplyDeleteI do use a sketchbook to work out most of my designs although most of my sketchbooks are a bit messy, disjointed and often just what I am thinking about not really anything I would share. I make lists and notes in them as well. I recently started a doodle notebook that I try to draw in everyday to get more confident in putting pen to paper.

Having a sketchbook always scared the daylights out of me because I am NOT an artist and I always let perfectionism get in the way. I'm currently taking an online course (An Embroiderer's Ledger from Karen Ruane) and I think I am finally breaking through my sketchbook block. A copy of The Sketcbbook Challenge is on my wish list too.

ReplyDeleteI always use a sketchbook, mostly with graph paper. I can always enlarge or make a "pattern" to follow. Helps me work out my ideas ahead of time or capture an idea when it comes.
ReplyDeleteI do use a sketch book/journal. Sometimes I use it to try out a new technique that I will later incorporate into my art. Often I use a journal just to create with no expectations. If a page turns out ugly I just don't care as it just doesn't matter. It is very freeing to me.
ReplyDeleteI go in and out of sketchbook use. Sometimes I am really into it and will create work from it. Other times I just work from something that inspired me such as a picture I take of something. Great work and book looks fun!

ReplyDeleteI haven't been using a sketchbook, but it's never too late to start! I noticed several comments on Zentangles...I was doing these back in the 60's before I knew what they were called (maybe that term did not exist til later!)
ReplyDeleteI do use a sketchbook, I jot down and draw (try to) all kinds of ideas for embellishing and designing. It's a great reference tool!!
ReplyDeleteI more often jot ideas down on bits of paper, and then tape them down into my sketch book where I flesh them out before starting on a project. Some times I get home from work and have six or seven bits of paper and post-its all brimming with wonderful ideas.

Pick me! Pick me, Lyric! I've only recently retired after a 35-year career in public education. Of course, I've quilted along the way, but not as much as I'd have done without the responsibilities of working each day. As a former art teacher for the initial 15 years of my career, I am in the habit of keeping a journal that includes lots and lots of sketches and ideas. My sketchbook/journal has been especially useful for making baby quilts for gifts. I'm looking for inspiration right now, and would love to have that book.

ReplyDeleteMy book just arrived this weekend, and I am looking forward to reading it. As far as a sketchbook goes, I use it to think concepts through, and my "book" consists of loose pages. Sometimes the concepts are related to things I design, and sometimes not.
ReplyDeleteI have long had circles show up in my art quilts and my sketchbooks as well. Don't have a reason why. Just like them. As for using a sketchbook to work out designs, sometimes yes, sometimes no. I often use my sketchbooks to just put ideas down so I don't forget. Sometimes, those ideas get worked into a quilt, sometimes they become the inspiration for a quilt.

ReplyDeleteI usually design my art quilts by sketching with pencil in my sketchbook, then enlarging on an overhead before translating it into fabric. Most of my designs are abstract, so the most challenging part of the sketchbook challenge for me is trying to draw realistic objects. It's been a great inspiration to move outside of my comfort zone! Thanks.

I have a couple of different sketch books, one that I keep in my purse, one that is on my nightstand and one that is in my studio.The one in my purse is because sometimes I see things while I am out and I don't want to forget an idea, so I quickly can jot it down. The one on my nightstand is for those middle of the night ideas that you have that you don't want to forget by morning - because you will, I am proof! And then the one in my studio is for right before I do things I sometimes like to sketch it out once again just to get the feel for what I am doing. I think a sketchbook is a necessity!

ReplyDeleteI don't use a sketchbook so much as individual pieces of paper I collect in a container. Sometimes I want to use differend media to express the idea and choose the paper accordingly!
ReplyDeleteI like the circles theme and the idea of using them seems intriguing to me. I use two or three or maybe more, lol!! sketchbooks, one is for when I am designing a new necklace or any piece of jewelry. I have one in my handbag and if I see anything that catches my eye or speaks to me I try to capture the idea, so down it goes in my handbag sketchbook, another one is near my bed with a tiny lamp,(so I do not wake up my hubby), I get these crazy crafty ideas when I am falling asleep, so I quickly jot it down but sometimes, more often than not, I get up and make a rough sketch for the next morning.

I use a sketchbook and add almost anything to it that might help from sketches to thoughts to anything that can be pasted on the inside pages. I usually stitch a cover and try new techniques.
ReplyDeleteI had to keep a sketchbook when I was in college art classes and I learned to appreciate the value of having one. I wish I had this book so I could keep up that skill. I've gotten a little lazy about it.

I use a sketchbook sometimes when I am thinking detailed ideas and need them to come together so they all fit. You know how an idea in your head looks great but then on paper, hmpfh! LOL!

I have many sketchbooks going at the same time, in various sizes. There's always one to hand when I want to capture an idea. Sometimes going back to a silly doodle months later will trigger a more fully fledged project.

ReplyDeleteBecause I have always had challenges drawing, my sketch book use has been limited. Lately, though, I have employed one while designing my website for the family business. I've also found that web design can satisfy my creativity--who knew? I think this may be the start of more sketchbook use, like a toe-dip into the waters.

ReplyDeleteI have a sketchbook right by my bed as I am always coming up with ideas late at night. Also carry one in the car. Have been known to pull over to "just write something down". LOL Am loving your circles.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. I haven't attempted circles yet (I'm a quilter) but have some tools need to try out. I still use an old sketchbook to make my idea drawings.... but mainly I draw on whatever bits of paper I have handy when inspiration hits me such as envelopes or the newspaper. Then, will take the ideas I like and transfer to graph paper so have a built in scale reference.
ReplyDeleteI jot down ideas in my my sketchbook that I keep handy at home and in the car. Sometimes it's a list of materials or an idea that springs from a fleeting thought or memory. I try to remember to make a little sketch and think about color palette, even if I don't have any colored pencils handy. ~Denise

ReplyDeleteI keep a sketchbook just for the pleasure of recording things I see/think. I do use it from time to time to work out ideas for crazy quilting motifs and seam treatments - it's nice to see what I will get beforehand (most of the time I just embroider and make it up as I go along:).

ReplyDeleteMy sketchbook is more like a collection of ideas, with lots of different kinds of things inside. Sometimes it has designs, but my quilt designs are usually worked out in EQ. Occasionally, I just wing it!

This is the first peek I've seen into the Sketchbook Challenge book. Looks wonderful! I use my sketchbooks to help me work out problems I am having with pieces I am doing and to get ideas down that come at the wrong time (like midnight). I'm working on trying to keep one more regularly.

ReplyDeleteI love working out color combinations in my sketch book using watercolors and/or magazine clippings. Then when I have a design idea, I can marry it to a color combination and it seems to work magic. (And if it doesn't, there's always another color scheme waiting for its chance)!

ReplyDeleteJust recently started my sketchbook. I record directions for techniques, methods, stitching ideas. Also, I sketch rough designs for my quilts and add to it as more ideas surface. I glue in small fabric samples I've painted or printed, etc.

ReplyDeleteI do have a sketchbook but I have not used it much. My drawing skills are not shall I say - developed. I do jot down a rough out line on paper when I am making something big. But using a sketchbook seems to kill off my ideas. I bring the book out and the ideas stop. Have to work on this...

I do use a sketchbook. As they say, make visual decisions, visually. And by seeing ideas, even if just hastily scribbled in remind me of what I'm visualizing!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes make sketches, but not in a book. That sure would be a more organized way to keep the ideas for projects I hope to make. Love your circle work!
ReplyDeleteI want to be one of those creative people who sketch until they come up with a great design, then translate that to a great work of art. Typically, though, I'm flying by the seat of my pants in the studio, with the air turbulence to prove it.

ReplyDeleteMy studio books are prized possessions in which I work out all sorts of processes. They tell me where I'm going and then record where I've been and what I've done in the studio.

Thanks for the peak inside the book. I am just starting out in the journaling arts but am full of thoughts and ideas and carry a journal around with me to jot down things when they are fresh in my mind.

ReplyDeleteYes I do use a sketchbook to work out my designs. I usually do quick sketches of numerous ideas so I don't forget them (like brainstorming), then go back and narrow down my ideas and do more detailed sketches. Lately I've been trying to do my sketches on a tablet rather than paper. Thanks for offering this great give-away! Sue's new book sounds and looks fabulous!

ReplyDeleteI use all sorts of paper to work out a design. As a quilter I have used alot of graph paper. I have yet to really get into the sketchbook fully but that is why I'm reading this and other sketchbook artists blogs : )

ReplyDeleteI just use my sketchbook to practice drawing things, haven't really used it to test out any art ideas. However, my art journal (yeah, two different books in my head!) I have used to test ideas for paintings and surface ideas. I didn't really translate them very closely, but it was a great place to warm up and overcome "uh, can i do this."

The new book looks like another "must have"! I have a sketchbook but haven't disciplined myself yet to use it consistently. That is one of my goals for this summer.

ReplyDeleteLove the circles, I still remember drawing my first perfectly round circle and still love to draw them. I do use sketchbooks to work on designs though lately I use my planner more. I doodle linear designs between each day and also play around with variations on themes on the pages.

ReplyDeleteThere have been a few times sketchbook ideas have blossomed into a separate larger work but most oftenI don't have that intention - I'm just playing.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely colors and textures! I use a sketchbook to work out designs before I begin to paint. Placement, size, perspective. Usually done in pencil but it gives me a chance to "test" an idea before I begin. Sometimes what seems perfect in my mind doesn't look quite right when put down on paper. So my sketchbook is a valuable tool.
