I love music. All kinds. My play list is, shall we say.... diverse. It includes all sorts of classical, a-capella, jazz, folk, world, and classic rock to name just a very, very small slice of the stuff I enjoy. My favorites are often odd combinations like Sagapool (funky klezmer/new age) or Salsa Celtica.
Several months ago I was approached by a musician named Ryan Avery, a talented young violinist who is half of the talented electronica duo named Chance's End. The other half of the duo, Emily Zisman, is a folk singer with the kind of lovely clear voice I can listen to for hours.
Anyway - through the wonders of the Web he had seen some of my work and the long and short of it is that my artwork is on the cover of their most recent album!
My favorite bits are often the pure and evocative violin introductions to pieces like "The Blue Because" or the ethereal vocal and string combination on "Intro to Superman." I tend to loose interest in some of the more atmospheric electonica interludes but that's me - not the music. I tend to listen very actively to music (as a musician myself) and just like I can't piece a quilt block over and over I need a lot of variety in my music.
"The two members of electronica outfit Chance's End, based in San
Francisco, will be the first to admit that electronic music is the last
thing you would expect to be heard from a folk singer and a classical
violinist. Vocalist Emily Zisman's folk-rooted melodies are awash in
Americana, while Ryan Avery's violin seeps into every crevice. But
throwing both of them in a room together is like putting Ani DiFranco
and Groove Armada into a washing machine set on spin cycle – you get
some convoluted metaphor that results in good music"

And just for fun
I'm giving away a copy!
Leave a comment (make sure I have a way to get in touch with you) telling me what you listen to when you create. If you have any suggestions for more odd combo type groups tell me those too! On Friday the 20th I'll pick a winner and ship out your very own copy.

I once drove from Baltimore to Philly in one night to see Ani in concert - what energy!
ReplyDeleteI have a very eclectic taste in music - the Long Ryders are my favorite rockabilly, I love movie soundtracks - lately "Enchanted" and "Best Friend's Wedding", Ani DiFranco's "Building's and Bridges" and "Face Up and Sing"songs, Jason Mraz and She and Him (love Zooey Deschanel's voice)
check out She & Him's video - fun circles towards the end...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ3cTwI9bIw
ReplyDeletehow cool is that! nice to have a wide variety of venues for your art. If one is open to everything - things happen. When I create I like to listen to the human voice - I like podcasts - mostly quilting or information such as the stuff you should know ones.
ReplyDeleteA great addition to your resume! Looks wonderful - thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the album cover! How cool! I listened to the Superman link you posted...Chance's End sounds great! I listen to a wide variety of music as I work in my sewing room...oldies, classic rock, country, and even some newer popular music. The only genre I tend to avoid is rap.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the album cover.

Wow. It's fabulous music. And what great cover art! Congrats, Lyric, this is WAY COOL!
ReplyDeleteWhen I taught school I loved to introduce my students to a variety of mnusic so I would play music while they worked on their sewing. I have a very eclectic taste so they got alot of music teens don't usually listen to. My favorite new age is Kitaro which has a amazing Asian influence. I am looking forward to your class in Houston.
ReplyDeleteHow cool your art and some new music to experience. I tend to listen to Kris Kristofferson, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Iris Dement, lots of old folk, some rock and roll (vintage 1960's early 1970's) some country and a little classical.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Your artwork is beautiful, Lyric. I usually like to have videos playing in the background, but every so often I listen to some Loreena McKennitt or my cousin's boyfriend's band: http://www.myspace.com/dasgroupe/music/songs/l-39-imposteur-86124959. Thanks for the giveaway - they sound great!
ReplyDeleteI like a mix of music from classical to Muse.
ReplyDeleteListened to the sample music-interesting sound. Really enjoyed it. I am very eclectic in my musical tastes. From classical to show tunes, classic rock to alternative, world music to new age. It just depend on my mood or the mood I need to create in.
